He retired on 7 June 1996. ®162 “Richard M. Westlund Aug. 8, 1939 — Oct. 25, 2011 Richard M. “Dick” Westlund, age 72, of Ashland died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011 at his home. He was born Aug. 8, 1939 in Ashland, the son of Olof and Myrtle (Becker) Westlund. He  was a longtime Ashland resident and graduated from Ashland High School in 1957. Dick continued his education, graduating from Ashland County Teachers College and UW-Superior.  On Aug.1, 1964 he married Joy Butterworth in Ashland. Dick was a teacher for 35 years . He  taught in Iron River for three years, Bruce for two years and Ashland for 30 years, retiring in 1996 as the art teacher in the elementary school. Dick was an active member of Salem Baptist Church in Ashland.  His hobbies included doing family genealogy, music, riding his mountain bike and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Joy Westlund of  Ashland; three children, Eric (Betty) Westlund of Ashland, Jan (Bradley) Larson of Ashland, and Kim (Tim) Israels of Blaine, Minn; six grandchildren, Mitchel and Brooke Westlund, Zackery and Cassondra
Larson, Alex and Caleb Israels; brother, Gordon (Lleaellyn) Westlund of Superior; brother-in-law, Ernie (Jo) Vennerstrom of Lake Nebagamon; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Dick was preceded in death by his parents;  a granddaughter, Jordan Israels in 2006; a sister, Betty Vennerstrom and other relatives. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct . 29, at Salem Baptist Church in Ashland. Pastor Rod Larson will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Salem Baptist Church. A family graveside service and interment will take place in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ashland at a later date.” ®3816
