He moved with his family from Bay City, Michigan to Bayfield, Wisconsin in 1900. He was unmarried and lived in Bayfield, Wisconsin at the time of his father’s death on 11 June 1908. ®3277 In World War I he enlisted in the United States Navy on 16 May 1917 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin (service number 1800499). At enlistment he was 5 feet 9 ½ inches tall, weighed 170 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair. He was stationed on 19 Jul 1917 for training with the 5th regiment, 5th Company, Naval Air Station, Newport, Rhode Island. Following training he was assigned to Norfolk, Virginia and on 24 Aug 1917 is at Portsmouth, Virginia, Naval Hospital awaiting possible surgery. He was assigned to the USS Florida as an Electrician Third Class, which on 25 Nov 1917 left Norfolk for Europe, where he was stationed at Newcastle, England. On 19 May 1918, while he was on leave, he was in an air raid by the Germans on London. On 1 Nov 1918 he still is in Europe, and on 1 Feb 1919 he is back in Norfolk, Virginia. On 16 March 1919 the USS Florida was at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and St. Kitts. On 20 July 1919 he is on the USS Nebraska awaiting discharge in San Francisco, California. On 15 Aug 1919 is in Redondo Beach, California, hoping to be discharged in a month; he was honorably discharged as Electrician 2nd Class in Minneapolis, Minnesota on 20 September 1919. The 1920 census shows Eli, Harry, William and Ernie living with Louise on Red Cliff Road in Bayfield. The brothers were all listed as being employed at Wachsmuth Bayfield lumber mill, William, 21, as a carriage rider. On the 1 April 1930 census he is a single 30 year old electrician boarding with the George Gebhard family at 582 66th Avenue, West Allis, Wisconsin. He married in 1930 and they lived at 607 South Layton Boulevard, Milwaukee, Wisconsinin from at least 1930 ®162 until he retired in 1966. He lived in Milwaukee at the time of his mother’s death on 4 February 1951. ®3961He lived in Bayfield until 18 March 1973 when he went back to Milwaukee to a rest home. On 26 November 1974 he was moved to the Court Manor rest home in Ashland, Wisconsin. He died at Court Manor on 28 March 1976.
