He attended Holy Family School in Bayfield through the tenth and last grade and then had to transfer to the Bayfield Public School for the 1941 school year. He spent his last year of high school in Virginia, Minnesota, where he lived with Vivian and Tony Bonicatto, and graduated from Virginia High School in 1942. ®3956 When he returned to Bayfield he and some of his friends went to Flint, Michigan where he worked in a factory milling machine gun parts. He was then drafted and served in the Army from 3 February 1943 until 3 February 1946. He was trained in anti-aircraft artillery, and later as a combat engineer. He met Leone Nickasch in 1943 in Washington, District of Columbia, when he was a Private in “C” Company of the 6th Anti-Aircraft Training Battalion stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. After they were married in 1947 they lived in Appleton and Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin while Roger worked on LST’s that had been converted to haul logs (for the Lullabye Furniture Company of Appleton), and later to haul coal and sand. In 1951 he became a Captain on tugboats for Dunbar and Sullivan of Detroit. In 1952 they moved to 29667 Winter Court, Garden City, Michigan. In 1977 they moved to 29571 Lori, Livonia, Michigan 48154 where he and, after Leona died, their daughter Diana lived until August 2009 (313-421-0814). He worked as Chief Engineer for Gaelic Tugboat Company of Detroit starting in 1979 until 2005. He retired completely at age 82. One of the Gaelic tugboats was named the "Roger Stahl” in his honor. He was a member of the American Legion, the Alhambra, the Knights of Columbus and the Shipmasters Association. In August 2009 he sold his home in Livonia and he and Diana moved to Apartment 101, 37825 Joy Road, Westland, Michigan 48185 734-392-7105. Diana came home and found him dead where he had fallen by the front door.
