Misc. Notes
“Norma was an exceptional swimmer. As a member of the Danish National Team, she was on a world record setting 4x100m relay team. She earned a starting position on the Danish Olympic Team in the 4x100m relay, but lost her chance to compete in the 1940 Olympics due to the war in Europe. About this time, she married Kirk Hansen, but the marriage was of very short duration as Norma joined the Danish Underground against the advice and wishes of her husband. The marriage ended within 2 years. There were no children from this marriage. Norma became more involved with the Underground, assisting Jewish people out of the country to safety. Late in the war, the Germans made positive identification of Norma being a member of the Resistance. By this time, things were going badly for the Germans, and they were never able to mount a serious threat to capture her, although she did have to keep moving around. On 16 July 1947, Norma arrived in the United States on the M/V Batory. She was naturalized in the Circuit Court of Ashland County, Wisconsin on 4 May 1951 - (Naturalization Certificate #68311170). For a period of time, she supported herself by employment as a swimming instructor. On 27 December 1947, she married Donald Chape, and there were 2 daughters from this marriage. She began working at the Bayfield County Courthouse in Washburn, Wisconsin, a job she greatly enjoyed, and remained there until her retirement in 1985. After retirement, and with her husband deceased, Norma sold her Bayfield home and moved to Orlando, Florida. Norma died .....on 16 December 1995 in Maitland, Florida. Both her daughters were with her when she died.” ®7003
