John White came from England in the ship Lyon, which sailed from London on 22 June 1632, and arrived in New England on 16 September following. He settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was admitted there as a Freeman on 4 March 1633, and moved probably in June 1636 to Hartford, Connecticut, of which town he was an original proprietor. Hartford was a Dutch trading post in 1633. Hartford was explored as Newtown in 1634, and the first few families moved there in 1635. 356 It was renamed Hartford in 1637. He was one of the first settlers of Hadley, Massachusetts, and Representative from Hadley in 1664 and 1669. About 1670, he returned to Hartford, where he was an Elder in the South Church and died between 17 December 1683 and 23 January 1684.58
