At the outbreak of the Civil War, though not yet 15 years old, he enlisted in the Confederate Army; in the spring of 1864 he was appointed major on the staff of General Henry Constantine Wayne. As his sister Eva Berrien Eve observed "The child is daft, and his uniform is irreproachable. He smiles blandly and tries to affect dignity” After the war he undertook planting in Columbia County.
®3327 Berrien Eve married Orrilla Moye. Their children were Gertrude Elihu, William Joseph, Theodora Horatio Eaton, Philoclea Edgeworth Casey and Irma Berrien.
