He was the son of Reverend Lyman Beecher and Roxanna Ward Foote.
2483He was a Presbyterian and Congregational Minister and a famed Brooklyn orator. He graduated from Amherst College in 1834 and from the Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnti, Ohio in 1837. From 1839 to 1847 he was pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1847 he took charge of the newly organized Plymouth Church, Brooklyn, New York, where through a long pastorate he became one of the most prominent and influential clergymen in America. His later years were clouded by scandal. He published many volumes of sermons and addresses; "Star Papers: or Experiences of Art and Nature " contains some of his contributions to "The Independent”
