He was a volunteer at age 16 on 7 September 1863 in Johnson’s Army of Tennessee. He was a prisoner of war for about eleven months in Chicago, Illinois. Later he became a planter. The family moved from Georgia to South Carolina about 1885, finally settling on the Eve farm on the Broad River. On the 1880 census is a farmer living with his wife and six children in Hammond, Aiken County, South Carolina. On the 1900 census he is a physician living with his wife Elizabeth and 6 children in Bluffton Township, Beaufort County, South Carolina.
