Notes for Harry Joseph (Spouse 1)
He was unmarried and lived in Bayfield, Wisconsin at the time of his father’s death on 11 June 1908. 721He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. From 21 Jan to 5 April 1918 he was at Paris Island Marine Camp, South Carolina. On 26 April 1918 Harry was single and a Private in the Marines as a cook at the First Aero Squadron, Naval Station Marine Corp, Curtiss Field, Miami, Florida. From 29 Aug to 4 Nov 1918 he was a Private somewhere in France with the United States Naval Air Force Northern Bombing Group. He was discharged from the Marines and back in Bayfield by 3 Mar 1919. The 1920 census shows Eli, Harry, William and Ernie living with Louise on Red Cliff Road in Bayfield. The brothers were all listed as being employed at Wachsmuth’s Bayfield lumber mill, Harry, 23, as a setter. Harry and Gen had a house in Bayfield as of September 1929. 243 From at least December 1926 until April 1931 Harry managed the Bayfield Fish Company owned by Mr. H. W. Elmore of Chicago. By December 1926 the company completed construction of the 80 ton capacity refrigerated building, which in 2008 is owned by Bodin Fisheries. Mildred Anderson worked there as book keeper and married Harry's brother, Ernest Lapointe, in 1930. The firm operated a steam tug, "The Charlotte", and five gas boats, including "The Chinook", 436 which Mildred and Ernest LaPointe purchased in 1932. On 30 May 1933 they moved to Mrs. Bark’s house in Roy’s Pointe. 243 In 1938 he was operating "The Chinook" as a pick up boat for his brothers Ernest and Philip Lapointe Brothers Fisheries. They lived in Huntington Park, California in 1946. 256 They lived at 1337 Stanford, Santa Monica, California 90064. He lived in Los Angeles, California at the time of his mother’s death on 4 February 1951. 2339He was a chef in Los Angeles area hotels, including the Biltmore Hotel.
The Bayfield Progress “January 15, 1918: Harry LaPointe and Raymond Close went over to Duluth Thursday to seek enlistment in that bunch of fellows "who always get first to the scene of fighting", -- United States Marine Corps. Both lads cut by the examination nicely and were accepted for service. They returned here Friday to say their goodbyes. On Monday a departure for their first drilling station, -- Parris Island, South Carolina. Goodbye, boys; and best o’ luck. The voluntary enlistment of Harry LaPointe gives to his mother, Mrs. Louise LaPointe, special distinction in this community, -- the mother of three boys who are volunteers in the military service of their country. William LaPointe is in the Navy serving on board the battleship USS Florida, and Eli LaPointe who went off from here with Bayfield Counties Company D of the 6th Wisconsin Regiment and is now with Truck Company # 4 Supply Train, in Camp MacArthur, Waco Texas. It is certain that Mrs. LaPointe hasn't been overjoyed to see her boys leave; but it cannot be doubted that her heart is filled with pride because of their ready response to their countries call. May they all return to her safely and claiming when America's victory has been won.”
