She and her sister Harriet never married, and always lived with their parents. When the twins were young, their mother worried that they were becoming too frivolous. Her feelings contributed to the characterization of the young women in her book "My Wife and I and We and Our Neighbors". As adults, the twins were competent and responsible women who managed the family home and participated in the social and cultural life of Hartford.
