He graduated from Princeton at age 17, then studied law with Georgia's Chief Justice, John H. Lumpkin. He was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Georgia when he was aged 19. In 1857 he moved to Paris, Texas and became a leader at that bar. He was a Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas. 342
