He was ordained at age 18 in Athens, Georgia. He was a Methodist minister in Augusta, Atlanta, Griffin, Columbus and Macon, Georgia. He was a Chaplain in the Confederate Army and was Chaplain of the Georgia legislature from 1871-2.
