He was born in 1831 in Baden, Germany. He emigrated at age 16 in 1846 with his parents to New York. In 1855 the family moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where George married Apolonia. In 1865 they moved to Madeline Island where he farmed and logged and was the proprietor of the general store in the old Andrew Cramer place. A copper mine on the Montreal River near Hurley, Wisconsin failed. ®2560 Stahls and O’Malley came during Father Chebuls time about 1860-61. ®5712 In 1870 he was a 34 year old merchant in LaPointe with real estate valued at $3000 and a personal estate of $3000. Living with George and his family is John Stahl, aged 30 and a clerk who was also born in Baden. ®5713 In 1880 he, his wife and their eight children still lived at LaPointe on Madeline Island. ®5714 They then moved to Bayfield, Wisconsin where they were members of Holy Family Catholic Church. ®2560 By 4 July 1878 George Stahl had a store in Bayfield. ®5715Both George and Apolonia lived in Bayfield in 1905.
