He was about 2 years old when his mother died, and 4 when his father died, so he was raised by his Uncle Samuel and a relative Enoch Moody, both of whom were also from Falmouth/Portland, Maine.
Enoch Moody was established by the Courts as his guardian in October 1748. In June 1764 James Moody of Falmouth inherits land from the estate of Joshua Moody, Esq. In October 1767 James Moody of Falmouth, Blacksmith, bought 30 acres of land from James Candage in Pearsontown, now Standish, Maine. In September 1769 James files his intent to marry Elizabeth Shaw in both the Gorham and Standish, Cumberland County, Maine records.
