“Missing after the Battle of Long Island”. He may have been buried in a mass grave discovered during construction in the early 1800’s of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. (History of Long Island, Prime, Nathaniel S., 1845 p. 367) ®8 “John served in the Rev. War - engaging as a volunteer the same year as his marriage. It is said that he was taken prisoner and with others was shut in the ‘Sugar House’ near New York City where so many prisoners suffered and where he died of maltreatment. The exact date of his decease is not known. It must, however, have been previous to the settlement of his father’s estate in 1776, as is shown by reference. His age therefore, was about 20.” They settled in West Hartford, Connecticut and had only one child because of his early death. ®408
