She was born on Brennekasa Farm in the parish of Heddal, Telemark County, Norway. She met Edwin when she moved from that farm with her parents (Halvor Kittelson and Bergit Stubbend) and her four sisters to become a domestic servant at Grini Farm just north of Skien, Norway. They all immigrated to America.

"Edwin Ellickson" is the Americanized name and was changed by him through the court processes of Cook County, Illinois about 1881-82. His Norwegian name was Evinid Aslakson Grini, which means Evinid, son of Aslak from Grini Farm. He was married four times, but had children only with his first wife, Inger Halvorsdatter. Together they had 10 children but only five lived to adulthood. Inger died in childbirth with the last baby.
®5404 Evinid emigrated to the United States in 1871. In 1888-89 and 1900 he lived at 1100 West Second Street, Ashland, Wisconsin and was in business as B. E. Peterson & Company with Beck E. Peterson and John A. Paulson, selling logs, railroad ties, posts and pilings. By 1916 he had moved to Harvey, Illinois where he died in 1933.
