Notes for Frank BELANGER SR.
He attended Bayfield Public Schools circa 1872. 593 He was the founder of the Belanger Settlement in the Township of Bayfield, County of Bayfield, Wisconsin. He and his wife and their first three children homesteaded 160 acres in the 1880’s. It was all wild land and there were no roads, so he had to cut a trail 12 miles out from Bayfield. Their first home was a log cabin. Ten more children were born at the Settlement. He drove teams for the mills at Cranberry River and later worked with the surveyors. As their children grew up and married he gave them each 10 acres of land. In 1888 he sold land to William Morrin and to Francis Morrow, Mrs. Belanger’s father, and donated 2 acres for the school property. The original school was built in 1898 and from then until 1907 the teacher was Dominic Du Charme.
