“Captain James (Jim) K. Hudson, age 34, of Bayfield, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, following a tragic accident on Lake Superior. Jim was born Aug. 22, 1978, in Washburn, the son of Elizabeth (Basina) Hudson.
Jim was a member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. He attended Vermillion College and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, graduating in 2000 with a degree in natural resources, and became a Coast Guard Captain in 2010. He married Hannah Stonehouse (Davis) Hudson on July 9, 2005, in Bayfield, where they lived with their dogs, Scout T. and Stewart.
As a member of the Bayfield Police Department for 10 years, Jim took care of the community that raised him. He devoted his law enforcement career to making sure his friends, neighbors, and relatives were protected and cared for.
In 2011, Jim left the police department to pursue his true passion: fishing. He owned and operated Hudson’s On the Spot, and guided ice fishing and open water fishing.
Inspired by his grandfather, Franklin Basina, Jim’s life was all about teaching others to enjoy and preserve the lake and fishery he loved most in this world — Lake Superior. Every piece of his soul connected with that body of water, and he was happiest when he was on it — regardless of the temperature or the weather. He died doing what he loved most.
He is survived by his wife, Hannah; his mother, Betsy (Basina) Hudson; his brothers, Dennis Hudson (Anissa Cram), and Daniel (Astrid) Paulson; his nephews Dylan, Brandon, and Lukas; a niece, Sheree; and a myriad of aunts, uncles, cousins, and very, very special friends. The Bayfield area loved him as much as he loved it, and we will all miss him greatly.
A gathering will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, at the Bayfield Pavilion, followed by services at 2 p.m. at the Pavilion, located at 2 E. Front St., Bayfield.
The family would like to thank the community for their outpouring of support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jim Hudson Memorial Fund at Bremer Bank, P.O. Box 517, Bayfield, WI 54814.
The details of his service have been entrusted to the Mountain Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ashland and Mellen. Online messages of condolence may be left at the funeral home’s website, www.mountainfuneralhomes.com.” ®12148
