His ancestors were pacifists who came from near Heidelberg, Germany and were ironworkers or blacksmiths. They arrived through Philadelphia and settled in the Shenandoah Valley in McGaheyville, Virginia. Archibald and his brother were both blacksmiths and were impressed into both the Union and Confederate armies. In 1859 some of the family moved to North Dakota1919
