Research notes for Samuel Ellis (Spouse 1)
On the 1820 US Census of Washington County, two Vancleaves live in Lebanon; John B with 19 whites in his household and Rachel with 14 whites and 11 slaves in her household.
On the 1830 US Census of Kentucky, there is no Marion County, but in Washington County lived Burdett Vancleave who lived alone with 4 slaves, and Cary Vancleave who had 7 whites and 4 slaves in his household. A third household in Washington County was headed by Sarah Vancleave who had 7 whites and 1 slave in her household.
On the 1840 US Census of Marion County, Kentucky, there were 3 Vancleave heads of house: Burdett A. who lived alone with 4 slaves, Cary Vancleave who had 11 whites and 5 slaves, and Samuel Vancleave who had 9 whites and no slaves.
On the 1 June 1850 US Census of District 1, Marion County, Kentucky, there were 16 male Vancleaves. Only 2 were old enough to be Samuel’s father; Samuel, born about 1797 in Kentucky and Cary A., born about 1797 in Kentucky. Both had large families which probably included Samuel and the other 13 males, as well as the females. A third possibility who lived in District 2 of Marion County was Burdett A., born about 1790 in Kentucky.
