Jean-Baptiste McCaie, 90, of 244 Conant St., Gardner, died peacefully Monday, May 5th in the Baldwinville Nursing Home, Baldwinville, following an illness.
Born in Rogersville, NB, Canada on July 29, 1917, he was the son of Sylvain and Annie (DesRoches) McCaie.
He was a carpenter employed by Simplex Time Recorder Co. of Gardner for 6 years until retiring in 1983. He was previously employed at Heywood-Wakefield Co. of Gardner.
Mr. McCaie was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church. He was the oldest living member of the Acadien Social Club. He enjoyed woodworking, watching his grandchildren’s sporting activities, watching the Montreal Canadiens Hockey team, playing cards, watching old time Western movies, camping at Beaman’s Pond, traveling, and looked forward to his yearly trips to his hometown, Rogersville, NB, Canada.
He was a member of the Canadien Army for four years during World War II and served as a prison guard in Jamaica.
He leaves his wife of 66 years, Rita Marie (Cormier) McCaie; 5 sons, Lionel J. McCaie and his wife Donna, Yvon J. McCaie and his wife Jeannette, Gerard J. McCaie, Rheal J. McCaie and his wife Lucille, Emery J. McCaie and his wife Linda, all of Gardner; 4 daughters, Geraldine M. Johnson and her husband Gilles of St. Louis, NB, Canada, Fernande Collette and her husband Joseph, Sylvia M. LeBlanc and her husband Charles, all of Gardner, Anne-Marie Belliveau and her husband Everard of Templeton; a sister, Ernestine Collette of Rogersville, NB Canada; 18 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 2 great-greatgrandchildren, 2 stepgrandchildren, 5 stepgreat-greatgrandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Francois McCaie of Rogersville, NB, Canada who died in 1979 and 3 sisters, Alice McCaie who died in 1996, Helene Cyr who died in 2000, both of Rogersville, NB, Canada and Sister Marguerite of the Congregation of Notre Dame in Nova Scotia who died in 1998.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 9th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St., Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
