In 1850 he is 15 and living with his widowed mother and six siblings in Northfield, Massachusetts. 343 In 1860 he is a 22 year old harness maker boarding in Greenfield, Massachusetts with the widow of his first cousin twice removed, Fanny Holton Moody and Frances A. Moody. 344 He then served as a Private in Company "A" of the 52nd Massachusetts Militia Infantry during the Civil War. The regiment was organized at Greenfield, Massachusetts in October 1862. Ordered to New York on 19 November 1862, they thence moved to New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and were on duty there until March 1863. Then they were attached to the 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, 19th Army Corps, Department of the Gulf until July 1863. They moved back to Massachusetts from 23 July to 3 August and mustered out 14 August 1863. The regiment lost during service 1 officer and 10 enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 101 enlisted men by disease. 433 After Warren and Nellie’s marriage on 4 Jun 1866 in Woodstock, Illinois, they lived in Lowell, New York where their first son George Burlingame was born on 17 Jul 1867. The 1871-72 Elmira City Directory lists him as a harness maker at Franklin near Fulton. Their second son Arnold Edwin was born in Elmira on 16 June 1874. The 1874-5 Elmira City Directory shows Warren as a harness maker living at 423 Pleasant Street. In the 1878-79 Elmira City Directory he resides at 423 Pleasant and is a clerk at 421 Railroad Avenue. Their third son Leonard Warren was born in Elmira on 13 Jul 1879. They lived at 423 Franklin St., Elmira, New York and he was a clerk in a bakery on the 1880 Census of Chemung County New York. 123In the 1882-84 Elmira City Directory he resides at 423 Pleasant and is a partner in Moody & Bowman grocers, bakers, confectioners, wholesale cracker manufacturers at 421 Railroad Avenue. The Elmira, New York business copartnership of W. L. Moody & J. N. Pirrong dissolved by mutual consent on 8 Sep 1883 with the business continued by J. N. Pirrong as Pirrong & Co. On 17 May 1885 their last child, Laura Lucinda was born in Elmira. In the 1885 Elmira City Directory E. M. Coke owns the bakery, grocery and confectionery at 421 Railroad Avenue and Warren L. Moody was a baker and lived at 423 Pleasant. He was a driver living at 423 Pleasant in the 1886 Elmira City Directory. They moved to Gardner, Kansas in 1887 in a letter from W. L. Moody dated 22 October 1887 at Gardner, Kansas in which he indicates that he is farming corn.198 On 1 March 1895 he was 56 and lived in Gardner, Kansas with his wife Ella, 48, and children Leonard W., age 16 and Laura L., age 4. 481

When did the family move to Gardner, Kansas? Had to be between 1888 and Warrens death in Gardner 14 Jan 1896. and probably by 11 April 1893 when Arnold writes a letter from Gardner. Is 423 Franklin, Elmira, New York in 1880 incorrect? The family lived at 423 Pleasant Street before and after 1880. Check the 1860 Northfield census to see if he was still with his parents.

Her ancestors were members of the Society of Friends and were early settlers of Providence, Rhode Island. She and Warren were married by her father, the Rev. Arnold G. Burlingame, in 1866. The 1 June 1880 census called her Ellen and said she was born in New York, as were both her parents. 123On 1 March 1895 she was 48 and lived in Gardner, Kansas with her husband, Warren, 56, and children Leonard W., age 16 and Laura L., age 4. 481 Warren died in 1896. On 1 June 1900 Ella G. Moody, age 53 and her daughter, Laura L., 15, live in a rented house in Gardner City, Johnson County, Kansas. She was born in New York State in October 1846, and both her parents were born in New York. She was a widow who had had four living children. 480 In 1910 she lives with a white servant in a house she rents on Park Street in Gardner. In 1920 she lives with a servant, Bertha Rice, and Bertha’s 11 year old son, Will, in a house on Park Street in Gardner. She died on 4 May 1924 at 9:05 AM at home of a paralysis of 2 days duration. Her death certificate says she was born in 1846.32

1920 Census says she was born in Illinois.192 She was married in Woodstock, Illinois in 1866. Why? She is called Nellie on the 1870 census of Elmira, New York.
