Martin was born 29 April 1913 at 7 Commodore Location, Virginia, St. Louis County, Virginia. As a child of about 1 year of age he moved with his family to Willard, Clark County, Wisconsin. They lived and worked on a dairy farm, which he and his new wife took over from his parents when they retired in 1946. He did not farm there too long as he and Sophia divorced. He then moved to West Allis, Wisconsin and was employed at the Heil Company in Milwaukee, Steen Welding Company in New Berlin and then owned and operated his own welding business, West Side Welding, until his retirement. He moved to Wittenberg in 1977 and lived with his only child, a daughter until at least 1993.69 He lived in Tigerton, Wisconsin in 1982 .124 In 1994 he had Alzheimer’s Disease and was living from before 7 Dec 1994 at ElderHaus, Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where he died in 1997. He enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting and gardening. His date of birth was 28 April 1913.69

Martin F. Matkovich, 84, formerly of Wittenberg and Willard, died Monday Nov. 3, 1997, at ElderHaus, Stevens Point. Graveside services and internment were held at noon on Nov. 7, 1997, at Holy Catholic Church Cemetery, Willard. Rev. Joe Follmar officiated.
Martin F. Matkovich was born on April 29, 1913, in St. Louis County, Minn., to Martin and Theresa Matkovich. As a young boy, he moved with his parents to Willard, where he worked on the family dairy farm. He then moved to West Allis, and was employed at Heil Company, Milwaukee; Steen Welding Company, New Berlin; and then owned and operated his own welding business, West Side Welding, until his retirement. He moved to Wittenberg in 1977. He had been married to Sophie Plautz prior to marrying Gladys Trost, who preceded him in death. He then married Gwen Geiger. He enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, and gardening.
Survivors include one daughter, Carol Cole, Madison; two sisters, Ann Gnader, Dallas, Texas; Marie Rauen, Burlington; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John Mackovich and Louie Matkovich; and one sister, Emelia Bertrand. Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg, assisted the family with arrangements.153

Sophie B. Matkovich March 20, 2004, age 83 years. Preceded in death by her son, Martin Jr. Dear mother of Carol Cole of Madison. Beloved sister of Angeline Levesque of Orlando, FL., Rosaline Pakiz of Greenwood, WI, George Plautz of Greenwood and Emil Plautz of Withee, WI. Further survived by her dear friend, Emily, all her friends at Sunrise Apartments, her kindred spirit, Jo Timms of Interfaith, Yvonne Duemke and her loving nieces, Marcia Cholka, Judy Weis, other relatives and friends. Funeral Service will be held Thursday at Schaff at 11 AM. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation Thursday at Schaff, 10 AM to time of Service. MATKOVICH-PLAUTZ

On Saturday, May 4, 1946, at Rose of Lima Church, Milwaukee, at 8:20 a.m. Miss Sophia Plautz, daughter of Mrs. Mary Plautz, Willard, Wis., was united in marriage to Martin Matkovich Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Matkovich Sr., of Willard. Rev. Father officiated at the nuptial High Mass. The bride was given away in marriage by her brother-in-law, George Kuge. She wore a white lace gown with a train, long sleeves, and fitted bodice and buttoned down the back to a lowered waistline. Her fingertip veil was held in place with orange blossom pompoms. She wore a heart shaped locket, a gift of the groom and carried a bouquet of white roses and red carnations.
The groom wore a brown suit with a white rose buttoniere. He was attended by George Plautz, brother of the bride, who also wore a brown suit with a white rose buttoniere. Immediately following the ceremony, breakfast for the bridal party was given by Rosaline Plautz, sister of the bride. Dinner was given later in the day at the home of Mrs. George Kuge, another sister of the bride. Reception was held at 8:30 that evening at Kralp's Hall for 75 guests. Those from out-of-town who attended the wedding were: Louis Matkovick, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Rausen, Mrs. John Plautz, George Plautz of Willard and Mr. and Mrs. John Matkovich of Alma. The young couple will make their home on the groom's farm south of Willard. The Gleaner joins their many friends in extending congratulations and best wishes for many years of happy wedded life.
