On 14 June 1945 they lived at 149 South Hancock, Madison. They lived in Madison until they moved back to Ashland on 30 July 1949. They lived on Lake Park Road, Ashland, Wisconsin 54806. He lived at Apartment 4, 225 Harbor View Drive, Washburn, Wisconsin 54891 after Bernes died in 1986.243

She graduated from Ashland County Normal School on 9 Jun 1939. While attending Northland College she taught at Iron River, Washburn and rural Ashland schools. She was a teacher in the Beaser, Willmarth and Bay City schools of Ashland, Wisconsin for 25 years, retiring in 1979. She taught Sunday School for many years at Salem Baptist Church. She was a member of the Salem Baptist Church, the Alpha Delta Kappa education sorority, the Ashland Education Association and the Ashland Federation of Teachers. 243
