He was a native of Poughkeepsie, New York and came to North Carolina with his brother, Dr. John Beckwith, settling in Newbern in 1808. 361He was an eminent lawyer and legislator. He read law under the direction of a Mr. Martin and in 1812 located in Smithfield, Johnston County, North Carolina. In 1829 Plymouth, Washington County, became his residence and his demise occurred at the place on the 10th of April 1850. He was a prominent member of the Whig party and represented his county in the House of Representatives of North Carolina in 1831.361
