Col Philip Henry Raiford and his brother William Newby moved to Montgomery, Alabama in late 1834. They purchased a saw and grist mill, which burned on 24 Aug 1834 – uninsured. He was commissioned as Adjutant General of Alabama with the grade of Colonel. He co-organized a regiment of volunteers in Mobile for the Mexican War (1846). In 1847 he represented Macon County in the Alabama Legislature. He was appointed United State Indian Agent for the Indian Territory that became Oklahoma. He was part of the brick making facility in Florida, providing bricks for Forts Jefferson and Taylor in Florida. He moved to Travis County, Texas and raised stock. He moved back to Georgia and was active in promoting a construction of a series of canals along the Gulf Cost and across Florida. He died on 27 Feb 1878 in Georgia and was buried in an unmarked grave (Ceylong Cemetery) on the banks of the Satilla River A federal marker on an empty grave in the Baggs Family Cemetery just east of Ludowici, Georgia, is the only reminder of this man. He had a total of 7 children, 1 with Sarah Maria Gindrat and 6 with Frances Ann Franklin. Of the six children by his second wife, one was named Henrietta Raiford and another Sarah Jane Raiford which has produced some confusion among researchers. ®4857
