“There will be a memorial prayer service in memory of Elizabeth Fisher at 9 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at the Bayfield Presbyterian Church in Bayfield. Rev. Ray McCalla will officiate. Elisabeth French Fisher, age 81, of 802 Washington Ave. Bayfield, died Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at 320 Superior Ave. in Washburn. She was born February 25, 1922 in Bayfield, the daughter of John J. and Ethel Fisher. She graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Education and Master of Education from Wisconsin State University at Superior, and taught in the public schools at Rock Island, Ill. and Superior. She was supervising teacher in the Laboratory School at the University in Superior with the title of Assistant Professor of Education. Elizabeth did post graduate work at the University of Minnesota in Duluth, Minn. and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. While living in Superior she was a member of Hammond Ave. Presbyterian Church, the Claude Jean Allouez Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Queen City Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Alpha Beta Chapter of the Pi Lambda Theta, a honorary sorority for women leaders in education at the University of Wisconsin campus. While affiliated with the Superior Public Schools she was president of the Association for Childhood Education, president of the Superior Classroom Teachers and the Wisconsin Education Association. While at the University in Superior she was secretary of the North Wisconsin-Lake Superior Education Association, secretary and treasurer of the Association for State College Faculties and co-advisor of the Tau Alpha Chi sorority. After retiring from the University in 1967 she moved back to Bayfield. She was a member of the Bayfield Presbyterian Church serving on the Deacon Board and as Membership Secretary, the Bayfield Heritage Association serving as Membership Secretary since its inception in 1974 and she monitored the archival tapes presented to the Carnegie Library by Mary Rice. She also monitored birds for Project Checklist under the DNR for Project Feeder Watch and for Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Elisabeth was an honorary member of the Chequamegon Bay Birders, Wisconsin Society for Ornithology, Whitefish Point Bird Observatory, Cable Museum of Natural History, Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute and the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. He is survived by three nephews: John MacLennan Fisher, David Fisher, and Lee Benton; a niece, Jane Fisher Mayer; sisters-in-law, Joy MacLennan Fisher and Susanne Fisher, other relatives and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters: Eutoka Borth, Sarah Fisher and Marjorie Benton; a brother, John Fisher and other relatives. It was Elisabeth's request to have her body donated to the UW-Madison Anatomy Department. There will be a grave side and inurement service in the Greenwood Cemetery in Bayfield at a later date. Bratley Funeral Home in Washburn is assisting with the local arrangements.”
