®4872 “Donald was an Ojibway tribal member and grew up as an outdoorsman, hunting, fishing, dog sledding, camping and canoeing to the uninhabited Apostle Islands just offshore. Donald graduated from Bayfield High School. He served with the Marine Corps during World War II on Guadalcanal, Guam, Okinawa and the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. He rose to the rank of staff sergeant. After the war he met and married Alyce Rae Warters and enjoyed 55 years of marriage until her death in 2002. He earned a degree in radio engineering from the Capital Radio Institute in Washington and went to work in broadcasting. He was a film editor for the Voice of America and the U. S. Information Agency. He retired after 30 years of government service. Donald is survived by his son, Donald J. Belanger, Jr., of Waldorf; a brother; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.” He was a qualified pistol and rifle marksman and became communications chief in the Signal Corps. He lived since the mid-1940’s in the Washington area, working first for WOL radio and then WTTG-TV before joining Voice of America, followed by the USIA and the State Department.
