On 1 January 1920 Frieda Van Boven, 23, born in Wisconsin, was a married servant who lived and worked in the hotel of Burt J. Bracken, 47, on First Street in Bayfield, Wisconsin. 1907 On 1 April 1930 Freda Vanbowen was a 34 year old cook at Pureair Sanatorium. She had married at age 18 and lived at Pureair Sanatorium. Her father was from Switzerland and mother from Germany. 1906 On 1 April 1940 Frieda Van Boven, 43, born in Wisconsin, lived in Bayfield, Wisconsin with her husband, James Van Boven, 65, born in Michigan, in the home of Frieda Van Boven’s mother, Johanna Wachsmuth, 74, a widow, born in Germany. Frieda was acting director at the county hospital .1905
Leonard W. Moody, M.D. was Superintendant and Medical Director of Pureair Sanatorium, a hospital of about 75 beds for inpatient tuberculosis patients from Bayfield, Ashland and Iron Counties from 1942 to 1967. He had an oupatient clinic for discharged tuberculosis patients who were no longer infectious, and did annual tuberculosis diagnosis skin tests for all school children in the three counties. Helena Erickson, R.N. was Head Nurse. Frieda Noreng/Van Boven was Head Housekeeper and responsible for all other hospital and grounds activities, as would a hotel manager.
