384“Grand Marais News-Herald, January 7, 1937: “LUICK LEAVES U.S. SERVICE AFTER 47 ACTIVE YEARS IN IT”
“After approximately fifteen years as keeper of the local lighthouse and after more than forty-seven years in similar work for the government, all told, E. Luick retired from service this past Thursday His successor, William A. Brooks, of Rock of Ages lighthouse will be here today, it is believed , to assume his duties.
“Mr. Luick, when a young man of twenty, came from Custer, Ohio, on March 3, 1887, landing at Madeline Island, Wisconsin. At this place an uncle, John Armbruster, lived. The latter was a lighthouse keeper at Outer Island, 35 miles northeast of Bayfield , Wisconsin . This was where Mr. Luick received his first experience in helping about a lighthouse. The First government boat, the Warrington, arrived for inspection. On this boat were Commander Elmer, Brigadier General of Engineers, William Ludlow. Noticing how well Mr . Luick did his work, they made him assistant keeper. Here he served three years.
“During this time and up until later years, the keepers on the islands used sailboats. Hence, "going to town" was not so easy nor frequent as it is now.
“In September, 1891, Mr. Luick was pleasantly surprised to hear that he had been appointed keeper of the Sand Island light station. This position was to take affect in January.
“Here he succeeded Charles Lederle, who was being transferred to Two Harbors so that his three small children, John, Teresa and Rose could attend school.
For nine years, Mr. Luick lived a solitary, Robinson Crusoe existence on Sand Island, until he was given an assistant, Harry Irvine, from Detroit…”
Research notes for Emmanuel M. LUICK
1. I am unable to find Emanuel Luick on the 1900 census. I manually searched the entire rural Township of Bayfield, and Iron River census and cannot find any of the families who lived on Sand Island during 1900, such as Moe, Eliasen, Hansen, Luick. I suspect the census taker never made his way to Sand Island.
2. Why did Emanuel Luick and his wife live in Iron River rather than on Sand Island on 4 June 1905? Where are the children?
