“Mr. Moody settled on the homestead of his father, his attention being given chiefly to farming interests, but somewhat also to the trade of a cooper.”
®408 He settled in Granby, which was still part of South Hadley until 1768,
®2019 sometime between the birth of Miriam in South Hadley on 19 August 1768 and the birth of Samuel in Granby on 9 April 1770.
®73 ®1632 On 10 July 1769, Elisha and his siblings, now all of Granby, honored the “purpose of our late father Samuel Moody” to give a piece of land near the meeting house in the East Parish in South Hadley (Granby as of 1768) to the town of Granby.
®2020 Elisha was a private from Massachusetts in the Revolution.
®610 ®1312 “Elisha Moody, Granby, Private, Capt. Eli Parker’s co., Col. Leonard’s regt.; enlisted May 8, 1777; service 2 mos. 8 or 9 days; company marched from Hampshire Co. May 8, 1777 to reinforce Continental Army at Ticonderoga for 2 months; also, Capt. Joshua Parker’s co., Col. Nathaniel Wade’s regt.; enlisted June 22, 1778; service at Rhode Island; enlistment to expire Jan. 1, 1779.” From page 894, Volume X of Mass. Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution.”
®627 Matthew Moody was a sergeant in the same company. On 16 November 1784, Elisha Moody of Granby sold to [his brother] Reuben Moody, half of “the lot on which my father decd dwelt” along with half of the house, barn, and malt house, saying the other half belonged to their brother Samuel.
®2021 No further sales of land by Elisha were recorded. “Elisha took part in Shay’s Rebellion which was a protest in the western part of Massachusetts against high taxes following the Revolutionary War in order to maintain an expensive form of government. Those who could not pay were jailed, this was in 1786-7.”
®8 ®778 In 1790 his family of 2 boys under 16, 2 men over 16, and 6 females lived in Granby.
®2022 Although he has not been found in the 1800 or 1810 census of Granby, he may be the Elisha Moody listed there in 1820, a male 45 or over with ten others in the household, including a female 45 or over.
®2023 Elisha left no probate record.
He may have been born in Hadley before his father moved from Hadley to South Hadley between 1731 and 1740.
