Donald Wayne Wilmot, 65, of Ashland, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at Memorial Medical Center in Ashland. He was born Dec. 3, 1946, in Ashland, the son of Gordon and Helen Wilmot.
He spent his childhood years on the Panasuk family farm in Mason where he grew up with his uncle Alex and family. Don was a graduate of Ashland High School in 1965, playing football, basketball and baseball and attended UW-Superior where he played football. He worked in law enforcement with the Ashland Police Department for several years and was Sheriff for Ashland County for two terms. Don worked for the Ashland Chamber of Commerce for several years in the late 1980's. Following this he became an Emergency Management Director for the State of Wisconsin and later for Fond du Lac County.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping, scuba diving and boating around the Apostle Islands. He enjoyed playing sports and coaching football, basketball, baseball and hockey. Don was an artist as well and enjoyed painting and sketching, which he was able to share with his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all his family and remembered as a loving, caring and giving father and grandfather.
Donald is survived by his mother, Helen Marie Wilmot, Ashland; three children, Amy Jarvela of Isanti, Minn., Chris Wilmot of Osceola, and Brian Wilmot of Ladysmith; three step-children, Kelly Furlong, Kay Furlong and Kurt Furlong all of Fond du Lac; six grandchildren, Ike and Owen Jarvela, Madelyn and Colton Wilmot, Hailey and Kayla Wilmot; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Congregational Church in Ashland. Dr. Darrel Robertson will officiate. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church. A spring family inurnment will take place in the St. Florians Cemetery in Ino.
