In 1880 Joseph was 11, born in New York, and lived in Gibralter, Door County, Wisconsin with his parents Levi and Rachel. Joseph was from Fish Creek, Door, Wisconsin. He was part owner and captain of the steamer Erie L. Hackley and perished with the ship in Green Bay waters about 2 miles northeast of Green Island the evening of October 3, 1903 during a violent storm. His body was recovered on Friday, October 30, 1903 and a funeral was held in Fish Creek on Saturday, October 31 with Rev. Kinsey officiating. Joseph was 34 years old.
